● WHERE TO START & HOW TO FIND HELP ●
What Does This Mean?
  • Counseling: treatment is given by a psychologist or social worker or counselor, who can diagnose mental illnesses and give counseling and therapy but not prescribe medication
  • Psychiatry: treatment is given by a psychiatrist, who is a medical doctor specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and is qualified to prescribe medication if needed
  • Day Treatment (Partial Hospitalization): intensive mental health services are provided at a facility or clinic during the day for several hours (for people who do not need to be hospitalized or stay overnight)
  • Outpatient: a person receives treatment at an office-based facility or clinic at a scheduled appointment and does not need to be hospitalized
  • Inpatient / Residential: a person lives in the facility 24 hours a day
  • Private Insurance: all forms of health insurance that are not funded by the government (for example, United Health Care and Medical Mutual)
