AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps is a work program for adults age 17 and older that helps pay for college. AmeriCorps members tutor kids, build affordable housing and work on various projects full-time or part-time over a 9 to 12 month period or during the summer in many locations throughout Ohio and the US. In exchange for their services, participants receive money to pay for college or help pay back student loans.

Central Ohio Workforce Investment Corporation (COWIC) Youth Works Program
Disadvantaged youth throughout Ohio can enroll in summer or year-round programs to improve career skills and learn how to be successful in the workplace. The sites change from year to year, and the programs are offered to teens ages 14 to 18 in school and teens ages 16 to 21 who have dropped out of school.

Columbus State Community College Center for Workforce Development
Offers an intense 8 week job training program to prepare students 18 years and older for employment in skilled trades (such as carpentry, plumbing, truck driving, etc). They help students get accepted into programs where they can “earn while they learn.”

Henkels & McCoy Training Services
Has helped thousands of youth complete school and enter the workforce. Their Tech Bridge and Youth Connections are offered for both in-school (younger) and out-of-school (older) youth ages 16 to 21. They offer computer training, job skills training and math and reading help. Once courses are completed, they can help students find permanent placement in a college or get a job. Students may be eligible for a free laptop as well. The program targets foster children, children with disabilities and families with low incomes.

Ohio Wildlife Center
Internships at the Ohio Wildlife Center are career exploration and skill-building programs in a wildlife education center setting. They work with area schools to schedule internships of varying lengths. High school and college students can volunteer for school credit, fulfill community service obligations or learn more about animal-related professions.

WrightChoice
High School / High Tech is a program that encourages high school students with disabilities to explore career choices in science, technology, engineering, and math. Project REACH allows students from racial and ethnic minority backgrounds and students with disabilities in central Ohio colleges and high schools to have internship opportunities in the MRDD field.

New Directions Career Center
Offers group programs and workshops, as well as individual counseling. Financial aid scholarships, bus passes and childcare assistance are also available. They work with all people over age 18 and specialize in assisting women making career transitions (although they help men as well). They help people regardless of their ability to pay, and offer free and low-cost workshops on interviewing skills, financial literacy, how to manage utility bills and more.
