PITTSBURGH PUBLIC SCHOOLS
After school programs exist in 75% of schools in the Pittsburgh School District. They are managed by school staff as well as school community collaboratives that include teachers, parents, and community agency personnel. These programs include academic tutoring and enrichment, clubs, athletics, social skill development and peer leadership. There are between three and twenty different programs at sites that provide after school programs.

Early Intervention Services

------EARLY INTERVENTION------

EARLY INTERVENTION is a publicly financed program that serves the following groups of young children:

1. Infants and Toddlers (birth to three years of age) who have:
• a significant delay in one or more areas of development;
• a specialist's determination that there is a delay even though it doesn't show up on the assessments (called informed clinical opinion)
• known physical or mental conditions which have a high probability for developmental delays

2. Preschoolers (three years of age to age of beginners) who have:
• a significant delay in one or more areas of development compared to other children his or her age
• any of the following physical or mental disabilities: autism/pervasive developmental disorder, serious emotional disturbance, neurological impairment, deafness/hard of hearing, specific learning disability, mental retardation, multiple handicaps, other mental impairment, physical disability, speech impairment or blindness/visual impairment, and a need for special education and related services.

Some children who are not eligible for early intervention may still be eligible for tracking services:
• under three and one half (3 1/2) pounds (birth weight);
• cared for in neonatal intensive care units;
• born to chemically dependent mothers;
• seriously abused or neglected;
• confirmed to have dangerous levels of lead poisoning.

Each county administers its own early intervention program. These counties may also provide other services that may be helpful to young children who are eligible for early intervention.

The easiest way for you to begin the process of enrolling your child in early intervention is to call the CONNECT Information and Referral number.

This program was established to help children achieve and maintain a healthy weight. It is part of UPMC and together they have developed a Behavioral Health network, which includes several regional behavioral health affiliates. SERVICES FOR TEENS AT RISK (STAR)
STAR is another programed offered by WPIC Hospital. It specializes in preventing and treating suicidal behaviors, depression, and interpersonal violence in teens. Provides outpatient assessment and services for kids aged 13-18 at risk of suicide as well as post-intervention counseling. They also provide grief counseling groups and suicide survivor counseling as well as outreach into the local community via schools and community organizations.

CENTER FOR OVERCOMING PROBLEM EATING (COPE)
This program is part of the services offered by WPIC and centers on treatment for patients with eating disorders including anorexia and bulimia nervosa at all levels of care. There is a 20 bed inpatient unit for the most seriously ill patient which is run by a multidisciplinary team. There are also Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient programs which provide structured therapy in a supportive environment without being in a hospital setting and an outpatient clinic used for assessment and extend counseling.

CAR SEAT SAFETY
As many as 90% of car seat's are improperly used in Allegheny County alone. According to Pennsylvania law all car passengers must be properly restrained. This website details the weight, height and age requirements for infants and children. The Pittsburgh police provide car seat inspections as well as teaching for installation and proper use.

CARBON MONOXIDE -- HOME SAFE HOME PROJECT
The Home Safe Home Program (from the Healthy Home Resources) works with families to help identify and prevent possible injuries to children in the home. For families with children under the age of six years old, Healthy Home Resources provides a Family Services Specialist who will help parents and caretakers understand child safety and work to identify possible hazards to young children. The Family Services Specialist provides the family with necessary safety devices including safety gates, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and cabinet locks.

Pennsylvania's Free Quitline (1-800-784-8669) is offered as a partnership between the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the American Cancer Society. Based on state-of-the art techniques in smoking cessation, the service provides counseling and structured assistance for individuals who are committed to quitting.

Smokers who live in Pennsylvania and are committed to quitting smoking are eligible to call the "Free Quitline" for smoking cessation assistance. Those wanting to help someone quit also are encouraged to call.

TEEN DROP-IN CENTER
The Teen Center (for middle and high school grades) focuses on recreational activities including sports and games. There is opportunity for homework help. A game room and student lounge, pool table, soccer football, hockey football, shuffleboard, chess, checkers, board games, magazines, books, television, and VCR are available. When funding becomes available, a computer lab will be opened. Hours: Monday - Thursday, 3:00pm-5:30pm; Friday, 3:00pm-6:30pm; with volunteer help, the hours of operation will increase.
