Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Ohio

Provides nationally acclaimed after-school and summer programming for youth ages 5-18. Programs are oriented around Academic Success, Character & Leadership, Mental Health & Wellbeing, and Life & Workforce Readiness. Club members have access to tutoring, sports, career-readiness opportunities, leadership opportunities, and mentoring. The CLUB is an inclusive, after school drop-off space for teens ages 13-18, and offers additional programs just for teens. Membership fees vary by Club but are meant to be low-cost for families (e.g. $10 per school year). Scholarships may also be available. Brainfuse HelpNow

Offers study tools and test prep, as well as 24-hour online support for students. They have free programs for K-12, college students, and adult learners. Programs include Language Lab, Writing Lab, SAT/ACT/AP test prep, and FAFSA help. Live, online tutors are available during specified hours. The Summer Skills Camp offers free, at-home activities organized by grade level and subject for students in grades 3-12.

Visit your local library to get access to free books, music, movies, documentaries, games, and more. Many libraries offer free community events, group reading times for children, homework help, job and business help, and more. Librarians can often help you get connected to local resources in your community, even if they are not offered directly by the library. Contact your local library for details.

Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML)

CML is an award-winning library and amazing resource in the community. With 23 locations throughout Franklin County, they provide a lot more than just books, including lots of free online resources, story times for kids, and community events. Programs include:

  • Adaptive Services: Request accommodations, adaptive audio and visual equipment, and large print reading materials.
  • Adult Education:  ESOL and GED referrals; free technology business, and coding classes; history and genealogy experts, Digital Navigator staff can help you access hardware and software, and Excel Adult High School allows adults to get their high-school degree in an online, self-paced program.
  • Business & Nonprofit Resource Center: Visit Main Library for access to co-working space, specialized professional help, access to community partners, tools, and resources.
  • Culture Pass: Use your library card to check out a Culture Pass for free admission to a variety of Columbus organizations and events; including Columbus Museum of Art, Franklin Park Conservatory, Columbus Clippers, Columbus Symphony, and more.
  • Kindergarten Readiness: Find Storytimes, Play to Learn, and Kindergarten readiness classes for ages 0-5. They also have Skill Builder videos with activities you can do together at home.
  • Notary Service: Free basic notary service with an Ohio Notary Public at most library locations. Schedule an appointment online.
  • School Help: K-12 students can get after-school homework help, K-3 students can get extra reading practice with Reading Buddies in person or online, HelpNow offers 24/7 online homework help and test prep, and some locations host After School Snack times.
  • Teen Programs: YouMedia Discord for ages 13-17 to work on music, podcasts, videos, and more with skilled mentors; homework and test prep help, and monthly Teen Spotlight videos.
  • Summer Reading Challenge: Readers of all ages can win prizes for reading every June – July.

Girls Who Code

Offers free, online coding clubs from beginner to advanced for girls, women, and non-binary people. Their website also has free, downloadable activities from beginner to advanced for anyone to learn coding at home. Their summer programs for high school students include a 2-week intensive immersion experience with financial assistance available, or a free 6-week self-paced option. Free and in-person clubs are available throughout the country at various schools and community locations, visit the website to find a club near you.

Grange Insurance Audubon Center

Nature center providing conservation and education services in downtown Columbus. The center is a pet-friendly, public space and admission is always free. They host regular STEAM programming and events for all ages, including bird walks, preschool story time, and art shows. They offer summer day camps for grades PreK-4, with limited scholarships available.

Institute of Reading Development Summer Reading Programs

Offers online summer reading programs for students Pre-K through 8th grade. Programs cover reading comprehension, reading speed, study skills, test-taking strategies and other skills. The program does have a cost for tuition and materials, and tuition varies by program. Scholarships are offered based on financial need and availability of funds. Khan Academy

Find free, high-quality, educational videos on K-12+ topics by subject or by grade. Topics include math, science, computing, arts and humanities, economics and finance, music, philosophy, and more. The Life Skills section includes internet safety, social media literacy, personal finance, college admissions, and social-emotional learning. They also provide free test prep tools for AP tests, SAT, MCAT, and LSAT. Khan Academy Kids is a free educational app for kids ages 2-8 with fun games, videos, printables, and more. The Khan Academy website can be translated into many different languages. Teachers can sign up for additional resources.

Leaders Emerging & Developing (LEAD)

Provides STEM education for underserved youth in grades K-12. Programs include STEM mentorship, leadership development, and tutoring. E-STEM (Empowering Students Through Experience and Mentorship) is an afterschool program with hands-on activities and tutoring at participating schools. The Drone Program allows participants to learn how to fly a drone, coding, teamwork and communication skills. Some services are free and scholarships are available. Summer programs include LEAD Summer Enrichment camp and Level Up: Algebra.

Ohio History Connection

The Ohio History Connection oversees 58 historic sites and museums across the state. The Ohio History Center and Ohio Village are located in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to the museum exhibits, families can take advantage of their many family-friendly events and activities. They offer immersive experiences for homeschool families. The website has lesson plans and educational resources for parents and teachers. They also offer free community events and opportunities for volunteering.

Private Tutoring Programs

  • Kumon
    Provides individualized instruction in math and reading for preschool through high school. The Kumon method utilizes short, daily assignments students complete at Kumon centers and at home.   • Math Plus Academy
    Offers small class sizes, creative lessons, and supportive coaching to help children build confidence, curiosity, and genuine love for mathematics.   • Sylvan Learning
    Provides personalized tutoring for K-12 students in math, reading, writing, and science. Programs include test prep for SAT, ACT, GRE, and more. They also offer summer camps and virtual classes. They do not offer scholarships but do offer payment plans. The Sylvan of Columbus center serves New Albany, Gahanna, Westerville, Reynoldsburg, Pickerington, Bexley, Blacklick Whitehall, Newark, Pataskala, Grove City, West Jefferson, and Groveport.

The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology

Interactive museum located in Newark, Ohio offering STEAM learning labs, planetarium, art gallery, and history exhibits. Admission rates are low and they offer many discounts for veterans, teachers, SNAP recipients, and more. They offer programming for families and adults year-round. Camps during school breaks are available for ages 5-7. Summer Camps are available for ages 3-9 and need-based scholarships are available. They also provide teacher professional development across east central Ohio.

Upward Bound Central Ohio

TRiO Upward Bound is a free program for income-eligible high school students to prepare for college applications and academics. Students can access year-round homework help and tutoring, cultural field trips, college tours, test prep and career guidance. The Summer program is a free, 6-week experience offering college prep, internship opportunities and more. Students receive money for full participation. Those typically underrepresented in postsecondary education (first generation, homeless, disabled, foster youth, or other barriers) are strongly encouraged to apply. Many colleges and universities across the state host Summer Upward Bound. Below are the organizations based in Columbus, Ohio. Requirements may vary between programs.

  • Columbus State Community College: For 9-12th graders at East, Linden-McKinley, Mifflin, Northland, or Independence High School. Participants will receive support navigating high school and preparing for a postsecondary education.
