Africentric Personal Development Shop (APDS)

Program: Provides culturally responsive behavioral healthcare and personal development programs for individuals and families. The organization was founded by and centers the African American community but serves all regardless of race, gender, disability, or economic status. They offer treatment and prevention programs for substance use and other mental health concerns. Programs include outpatient treatment with individual and group sessions, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance use disorders (SUD), medication-assisted treatment (MAT), aftercare programming, case management, and peer recovery support. They also offer a grief and loss peer support group, domestic violence intervention and prevention classes for adults, and Mindful Reactions anger management course for teens and young adults.
Youth programs include APDS SMART 2.0 Summer Camp, personal development program for ages 9-17, Urban GEMS for ages 12-19 to grow healthy food in their own neighborhood, and UCANN Lead for ages 11-17 to experience mentorship and civic engagement. They also offer two scholarships each year for youth ages 17-22 pursuing higher education.

Asian American Community Services (AACS)

Supports Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities in Central Ohio. They focus on East, Southeast, South Asian and Pacific Islander communities but assist individuals regardless of ethnic or racial background. Healthy Asian Youth (HAY) provides after-school and summer programming for low-income families. They offer free or low-cost classes for adults for ESL, Citizenship, and cultural arts. Be WISE Camp at Muskingum University

A summer camp designed to develop excitement, problem-solving skills, and self-confidence in middle school girls through real-life, hands-on experiences in STEM/STEAM. They host a day camp at Philo Junior High School in Philo, Ohio for girls grades 5-6, and a residential camp at Muskingum University for girls grades 7-8. Scholarships are available. Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Ohio

Provides nationally acclaimed after-school and summer programming for youth ages 5-18. Programs are oriented around Academic Success, Character & Leadership, Mental Health & Wellbeing, and Life & Workforce Readiness. Club members have access to tutoring, sports, career-readiness opportunities, leadership opportunities, and mentoring. The CLUB is an inclusive, after school drop-off space for teens ages 13-18, and offers additional programs just for teens. Camp Corral

A free week-long summer camp for military children ages 8 – 15. Priority enrollment is given to children of wounded, ill and/or fallen military members. The camp is held at various locations across the U.S., and helps kids learn new skills, build character, and make friends while enjoying the outdoors. Camp Kesem

Provides free support for children who have a parent with a cancer diagnosis. Camp Kesem is a free, overnight summer camp experience for children ages 6-18 at various locations across the country. Camp Lionheart

A free, week-long summer camp for youth ages 8-17 who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, or primary caregiver. Campers enjoy outdoor camp activities including swimming, hiking, games, and crafts. Campers also receive structured group grief counseling sessions with trained, licensed professionals. Campers grieve, learn ways to cope with their loss, make friends, and have fun. The camp takes place at Camp Oty’okwa in Hocking Hills. They also have opportunities for clinical volunteers, non-clinical volunteer, and donations. The camp operates on donations and families are not charged.

Career & Technical Schools in Central Ohio

Career Technical Schools offer training programs that can prepare students for the workforce or college degree programs. Career-Technical Education (CTE) is available at every public school in the state of Ohio free of tuition. High school students should check with their home school district to see what CTE school they are eligible to attend, and for transportation options. Students may attend CTE schools for half-day or full-day programs to continue extracurriculars or classes at their home school. Program pathways typically include healthcare careers such as nursing, information technology, automotive services, welding, cosmetology, graphic design, and others. Directions for Youth & Families (DFYF)

Program: Offers mental and behavioral health services for youth and families. Licensed social workers and counselors provide counseling and clinical treatment programs addressing a range of issues including school concerns, sexual abuse, delinquency, domestic violence, family conflict, substance abuse and mental health issues. This teaching garden is located in the Hilltop neighborhood of Columbus. They offer garden tours, field trip experiences and donation-based produce bags for pick-up. Provides wrap-around programming to support families overcoming or at-risk for homelessness. Law & Leadership Institute (LLI)

Works with high school students from underserved communities to prepare them for careers in the legal profession. They provide a year-round, four-year-long program which includes academic programming, a legal internship, ACT/SAT prep, college visits and application help, and moot court competition.  The program is free and students are provided bus passes and lunch. Lower Lights Ministries (LLM)

A faith-based organization serving individuals and families in Columbus. Transitional housing is available for previously incarcerated women, low-income families and individuals, and women struggling with substance use. The adult mentorship program includes a weekly hot meal, job and finance mentoring, life coaching, and supportive services. Lower Lights Salon offers quality hair services at a reasonable price.
